How to Turn Your Hometown into a Bucket-List Travel Destination
If you ever feel like your hometown is “nice” but not exciting, or like you’ll get around to exploring it “someday”, this one’s for you! This is a mini guide to turning wherever you live into a bucket list travel destination… without packing a single bag.
Maybe you’re sold on the idea of bringing Travel Season home. Or maybe you just want more adventure in your everyday life. But if you’re anything like us, you’ve lived where you live for a while and still haven’t made time for that popular restaurant down the street or the “tourist” activity that’s just twenty minutes away.
Here’s how we’re learning to turn our hometown into a bucket-list travel destination we can’t wait to explore. This is part 3 in our series of How We Turned Travel Into a Lifestyle (Even at Home) and How to Be a Tourist in Your Own City.
1. Pretend You’re Visiting for the First Time
This idea first clicked for us on a walk around White Rock Lake in Dallas. While talking about our plans for that year’s Travel Season, Jonathan said, “I feel like we know Yellowstone better than we know Dallas.” (And he was right.)
We’ve spent years learning Yellowstone inside and out… tracking wildlife migrations, mapping sunrise viewpoints, knowing exactly when and where to be for the best experiences. But in our actual hometown? We often default to the same neighborhoods, the same parks, the same restaurants.
There’s something about living somewhere that makes you think you’ll get to it eventually. You push off the museum visit for another weekend. You skip the new rooftop bar because you’re tired after work.
When we’re on the road, it’s different. We plan our days with intention. We look up the best places to eat, hike, photograph, and explore. We make time for experiences. We do the fun thing now, not later, because we know our time there is limited.
Ironically, while road-tripping for months at a time, we learned how to bring the feeling of home with us. In every new place, we found a favorite coffee shop, a local trail for daily walks, or a restaurant patio that’d feel familiar by the end of the week.
This year, we’re doing the opposite: we’re learning how to bring travel home.
That walk around the lake led us to a simple but fun idea: What if we brought that same planning, intention, and curiosity to the place we already live?
The first step to turning your hometown into a bucket-list destination is this: Pretend you’re visiting for the first time.
Ask yourself:
What would I research?
What are the “can’t miss” spots?
What would I be excited to try?
What hidden gems would I hope to find?
2. Research Like You Would for a Trip
Once we shifted into tourist mode, we researched our hometown the same way we’d plan any road trip. Here’s our step-by-step road trip planning guide.
We gather ideas through:
Google searches and image results
Travel blogs and Pinterest
Event calendars and seasonal guides
AllTrails for hikes and outdoor spots
As we go, we drop everything into one document, with a running list of places, activities, and experiences that seem interesting.
Then we group things by:
proximity
time of year
effort level
“this sounds amazing” vs. “this would be nice”
Even a small amount of research goes a long way to turning your hometown into a bucket-list travel destination.
3. Build Your Bucket List
This is where things start getting really fun! It’s time to build your at-home bucket list. We use the same categories we’d use when planning any other trip, just translated for home. Here are a few things we look for:
Top-rated restaurants you’ve never tried (we especially love restaurants with a view, rooftop bars, and experiential restaurants)
Iconic regional dishes (what is your area known for, and have you tried all the best spots in town?)
Wineries, breweries, or coffee shops with a view or a vibe
Farmers markets, food halls, dessert spots
Nearby hikes, climbing spots, or via ferratas
Kayaking, paddleboarding, or boat rentals
Bike trails or scenic walking paths
National or state parks within a day’s drive
Wildlife refuges or birding spots
Botanical gardens or arboretums
Museums or historic districts
Live theater or outdoor concerts
Seasonal festivals or pop-up events
A staycation at a boutique hotel
A spa day or a local hot spring
Nearby weekend getaways
Your list doesn’t need to be perfect or all-inclusive. It just needs to start.
4. Create Mini Road Trips
Once you’ve got your list, open Google Maps. Pin everything, then zoom out. This is where you start seeing opportunities to turn ordinary weekends into mini adventures.
Combine a hike with a stroll through a small town. Pair a museum with a great lunch spot. Map out a foodie walking tour with a handful of interesting spots.
As we do this, we usually organize ideas into loose buckets, like:
Things to do after work
Easy day trips
Weekend getaway
Seasonal must-dos or pop-up events
Sometimes we even theme weekends:
National park vibes: hike, picnic, sunset
Luxury staycation: hotel, spa, nice dinner
Small Town Saturday: diner lunch, antique shops, scenic drive
It keeps things exciting without feeling overwhelming.
5. Put It on the Calendar
This is where the magic actually happens. If it’s not scheduled, it’s easy to say, “We’ll do it someday.” And someday gradually turns into never.
So, we pick dates. And more importantly, we book it.
We buy the tickets. We make the reservations. We commit the same way we would if we were traveling somewhere new.
That’s the real difference-maker when it comes to turning your hometown into a bucket-list travel destination. You don’t need more time; you need to decide and then do it… just like you would if you hopped on a plane or took a road trip to get there.
Make the reservations. Buy the tickets. Put it on the calendar.
